De la Beche
Refurbishing a 19th century manor on a 20-acre estate in Berkshire to suit modern family life was the brief. Respecting heritage was the major concern, but the large and growing family also required more space.
To that end, a modern extension was added to balance the existing L-shaped plan of the mansion with an additional wing to enclose the front driveway. To marry the appearance of both buildings – both from different centuries – the form of the extension was derived from typical barn structures common in the estate and local villages, an elegant solution to a chronal quandary.
